Healthy Tip #1

Chew Your Way to Better Health!

"Chew your food!" Many of us have heard this growing up by our parents but, many of us still dont chew our food as well as we should.

Healthy digestion and nutrient absorption starts with the simple act of chewing our food. If you’re one of the many people who chows down in a hurry, or you chew each bite a few times before washing down with your favorite beverage, you could be setting yourself up for indigestion, constipation and other digestive problems.

When you chew your food properly, your body releases digestive enzymes that help to break down food so that your body can absorb nutrients more efficiently and convert it into energy. When food isn’t digested properly, you could suffer from low energy, or even a nutritional deficiency if poor chewing becomes a lifelong habit.

OTHER REASONS TO CHEW YOUR FOOD PROPERLY

  • Reduce the risk of bacterial overgrowth – Food particles that aren’t broken down properly can cause bacterial overgrowth in the colon which leads to indigestion, bloating, constipation and candida
  • Relaxes you - Chewing relaxes the nervous system and in turn reduces stress levels. Chew your food well!
  • Lose weight! - It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach/brain to register you are no longer hungry. If you eat more slowly, you will enjoy your meal and feel satisfied sooner. Several studies have been conducted and reported with success that people consume fewer calories on average if they eat slowly rather than quickly.

HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD YOU CHEW YOUR FOOD?

Please don't count how many times you chew while eating. This definitely prevents you from enjoying your food. Basically, you can swallow after all food in your mouth is broken down to a soft bolus like baby food consistancy. Soft fruits and vegetables will break down more easily than chicken or steak, so you will need to make sure you chew your food as thoroughly as possible. As David Wolfe says, "Chew your juice, drink your food".
Make room in your schedule for a clean start to your health and diet goals with a clean colon, where it all begins.
